sound proofing
Sound insulation is a major concern for the Duke Smart Home. The goal of this project is to provide sufficient sound insulation to address these two concerns with insulation derived from Rapidly Renewable Materials (RRMs). RRMs are beneficial to the environment and would help the Smart Home achieve Platinum LEED certification. Our plan for the media room is to attach insulation on top of each panel of the drop-down ceiling. Although this will forgo the ability to see through the panels, this will provide superior insulation. In other rooms, however, where sound transmission is relatively less, we plan to add insulation only above the walls of the room. We plan to evaluate the merits of potential materials based on their sound insulating ability [measured by their Sound Transmission Class (STC)], fire resistance, budgetary value, and ease of insulation. After choosing the materials, we will address the complication of installing insulation around fixtures in the ceiling including lights, signs, and sprinklers. We must also ensure that all building codes are met, and acquire any necessary permits.
